Resources for distant learning at home

Abstract: The issue examines the provision of families with resources for distance learning of schoolchildren, including the availability of the necessary equipment for this, as well as the possibility of access to it for children. The analysis is based on the results of a survey of parents of students (N=1800) on the transition to distance learning, conducted in May 2020 in 15 Russian regions. In every tenth family surveyed, a child does not have a laptop or computer for personal use. In half of the families, the equipment is at the disposal of the child, in the rest, the children have to share the devices with relatives. The results show that Internet access is not a problem for the respondents (less than 1% of families do not have access to it at home). However, the lack of a microphone or web-camera may become a limitation for full-fledged distance learning in 13% of families. Families with more resources for distant learning are more likely to strive to complete everything that is foreseen by the curriculum; the percentage of tasks completed by children in these families is slightly higher.
