Abstract: The unforeseen, forced experience of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed families with schoolchildren to see the learning process from inside. The difficulties that families faced during this period are explained not only by the lack of electronic devices and space at home or by the need to combine work and taking care of children, but are often rooted in the prevailing pedagogical culture. Such difficulties are associated with systemic "failures" of education, that highlight, among other things, the growing gap between the school and the real modern world. This newsletter describes experience of distance learning on the basis of an ethnographic study of 36 families from 9 regions of Russia. This methodological approach allows to reconsider the "taken-for-granted" and trace the encountered learning difficulties down to their roots. These observations should be taken into consideration in long-term development strategies of mass education.
