Students in a Pandemic: Distance Learning, Work Trajectories and Perceptions of Restrictions

Abstract:
This issue presents the results of the student survey conducted in the Perm campus of HSE University, Russia, May 2020. The survey was devoted to the student perceptions concerning distance learning and the problems (incl. psychological ones) that students may face during pandemic restrictions. In addition, a number of questions concerning student employment and their working trajectories in the new circumstances was asked. Based on the survey results, the following conclusions can be drawn: • Most students do not have technical difficulties or lack of equipment when participating in online classes. • On average, students perceive the transition to the distant learning neutrally and do not experience difficulties in communicating with teachers during online classes, while noting the lack of communication with classmates. • The main sources of information for students are their fellow students (classmates) and the Curriculum support unit. • Most of the students followed the recommendations issued against coronavirus: they kept social distance, washed their hands more often and tried to limit their communication with other people. At the same time, students were concerned about the health of their relatives (first of all) and about their own health. • More than half of working students were transferred to a remote working format with the onset of the pandemic. At the same time, the scope of tasks in most cases remained the same. • Students rate the chances of successful employment after lifting restrictions as average.
