Abstract:
This information newsletter analyzes the main practices of research and publication activities of Russian university faculty. Based on the data from the Monitoring of Education Markets and Organizations (Survey of University Faculty – 2020/21), the main patterns of research in three types of universities (leading, pivotal, and others) are described. The results are the following: The most common activity in Russian universities is teaching. Even in leading universities, with the emphasis on research, more than 2.5 times more time is spent on teaching in a classroom than on research at the same university. Thus, time balance is not favorable for the implementation of research activities; More than 2/3 of the respondents worked on the preparation of articles and monographs, and more than 39% were engaged in the implementation of individual or collective projects at the university where the survey was conducted, regardless of its status. However, professors from leading universities are more involved in research supported by external grants than employees of pivotal and other universities; Teachers of leading universities are more likely to publish in international scientific journals indexed in the Web of Science or Scopus systems, while teachers of universities without status are more often published in Russian scientific journals that are not included in international citation systems; The practice of paid publications is very common, especially in universities without certain status; Only 1/4 of teachers are involved in scientific collaborations with leading universities. This practice is most common in leading universities. However, teachers are showing a high willingness to engage in such collaborations in the future; The majority of teachers, especially in universities without status, prefer teaching to research and are ready to develop their careers in this direction.
