Abstract: The information bulletin presents the results of a study of the structure of participation of Russian schoolchildren in extracurricular activities, equality of opportunities for various groups of children, interests and strategies of families. The empirical basis for this study is the results of the survey of parents whose children attend general education organizations conducted as part of the "Monitoring of Education Markets and Organizations" in 2020. In the focus of analysis are the degree of involvement of modern schoolchildren in extracurricular activities at school and outside of school, the dependence of their involvement on age, type of educational organization, place of residence, socio-economic characteristics of the family and other factors. The structure of the involvement of schoolchildren in various directions of extracurricular activities, and distribution of time spent by a child on various types of extracurricular activities are described. The ratio of paid and free extracurricular activities in various directions is considered, as well as the change in the availability of free extracurricular activities. Special attention is paid to the barriers preventing the involvement of schoolchildren in extracurricular activities at school and outside of school. The effects of extracurricular activities and their relationship with the success of the child and plans for continuing education are also considered. The text contains the recommendations for the state policy to ensure the availability of extracurricular activities for schoolchildren, equality in the use of its opportunities for development and professional self-determination. The main conclusions: ? The vast majority of Russian schoolchildren (80%) are involved in extracurricular activities. This indicator has increased slightly over the past five years: according to a survey of parents conducted within the framework of the MEMO in 2016, about 70% of schoolchildren attended extracurricular activities. ? Three-quarters of students involved in extracurricular activities attend these classes outside of school. Many children combine extracurricular activities at school and outside of school. The main reasons that children do not attend extracurricular activities at school are the lack of interesting classes for them or the presence of more attractive offers outside of school. ? On average, schoolchildren spend about 10 hours a week on extracurricular activities. The lack of personal time for a modern student is one of the leading factors limiting participation in extracurricular activities, and it is mainly due to the large amount of time spent preparing for school classes. ? The child's participation in extracurricular activities in all parameters (place, intensity, time spent, direction, etc.) depends on the level of education of parents and the financial situation of the family, as well as the territory of residence. At the same time, the most pronounced influence of socio-economic factors on the inequality of children's participation in extracurricular activities is manifested outside of school.
