Abstract: This paper aims to determine the role of employment in the results of doctoral students and identify the relationship between the characteristics of the employment and various aspects of educational experience and outcomes. The research is based on several large empirical studies. It presents the prevalence of employment during studying at each level of higher education and the consequences of this phenomenon at the doctoral level. In addition, this paper discusses how administration of doctoral programs could take into account students’ employment and how changes in the doctorate can increase its effectiveness in the current conditions.
