Abstract:
The behavior of a spatial double pendulum (SDP), comprising twopendulums that swing in different planes, was investigated.Movement equations (i.e., mathematical model) were derived forthis SDP, and oscillations of the system were computed andcompared with experimental results. Matlab computer programs wereused for solving the nonlinear differential equations by theRunge-Kutta method. Fourier transformation was used to obtain thefrequency spectra for analyses of the oscillations of the twopendulums. Solutions for free oscillations of the pendulums andgraphic descriptions of changes in the frequency spectra were usedfor the dynamic investigation of the pendulums for differentinitial conditions of motion. The value of the friction constantwas estimated experimentally and incorporated into the equationsof motion of the pendulums. This step facilitated the comparisonbetween the computed and measured oscillations.
