A Systematic Review of Return to Education in Eastern Europe

Norio Horie and Ichiro Iwasaki

Economic Review, 2021, vol. 72, issue 4, 305-333

Abstract: This paper conducts a systematic review of 43 research works to identify time trend in return to secondary and tertiary educations in Eastern Europe. A meta-synthesis of 848 collected estimates suggests a decreasing trend over time in return to education in six East European economies. Synthesis results also indicate that the western countries in the region tend to have a higher return to education than the eastern counterparts. Both the meta-regression analysis of literature heterogeneity and the test for publication selection bias produced findings that are highly consistent with the meta-synthesis results.
