Abstract:
The internalisation of economic transactions is rapidly transforming the division of labour world-wide, questioning, among other things, traditional national borders. Communication technology accelerates and fragments spatially divided production process, while central and hierarchically structured firms undergo a process of decentralisation and networking of organisational forms of labour. This study analyses the impact that Information and Communication Technology has on the development of flexible and decentralised forms of labour organisation in the structure of regional labour markets. With the support of an empirical survey of the workforce development in the Rhine-Main Region, this study purports to demonstrate that the flexibilisation of regional labour markets, characterised by heterogeneity of labour arrangements and heightened fluctuation, is not caused by labour demand of flexible production systems. It is rather to be observed as the result of a segmentation of the labour market, in which different forms of labour organisation prevail.
