Abstract: "335,000 jobs in industrial occupations were lost between 1982 and 1989, while at the same time around one million new jobs were created in service sector occupations. This study on the employment opportunities of people from industrial occupations moving into service sector occupations revealed that the service sector occupations, in particular those in the distributive and administrative services, provide employment opportunities for people previously employed in industrial occupations. If one abstracts from the relative size of the individual occupational fields, then the distribution, production-related and organisation services prove to be particularly open to people previously employed in industrial occupations. These rather positive findings for the employment prospects of people employed in industrial occupations, are qualified by an analysis of the reasons for the change of employment: compared with the changes of employment within industrial occupations, the changes from industrial to service occupations are made more frequently from a job which is characterized by low entrance qualifications. Additionally in the case of changes from industrial to service occupations the required qualifications in the desired occupation are more frequently lower, so that people changing from industrial occupations do not profit from the higher qualification level in the service occupations."
