Abstract:
"This paper gives a short overview of various training measures for young people run by the British government in the past 35 years. The 'New Deal', which was introduced in 1998, is described and its development up until the end of 1999 is portrayed. An evaluation of the 'New Deal' is presented, based on data from 144 local employment office districts. The results show that the measure had a very limited influence on the local level of newly-created, non-assisted jobs and that the effectiveness of the measure is reduced by demand conditions."
