AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE MEDIATING ROLE OF ORGANIZATION-BASED SELFESTEEM

M. Todd Royle

International Journal of Management and Marketing Research, 2010, vol. 3, issue 2, 33-52

Abstract: This study examines the relationship between trait affectivity (i.e., negative -NA and positive affect- PA), organization-based self-esteem (OBSE), and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCB). The current research attempts to augment the field’s understanding by demonstrating that the relationship between affect and citizenship is at least partially mediated by OBSE. This paper tests hypotheses using data collected across two different samples: an organizational sample of 105 employees and an amalgam sample of 187 working adults. Findings indicate that OBSE mediates the NA – OCB relationship in the amalgam sample. OBSE also at least partially mediates the PA-OCB relationship in both samples. The paper concludes with a discussion of relevant strengths, limitations, directions for future research, and practical implications.
