Abstract: This research determines the monetary costs of the student desertion in academic programs of the University of La Guajira-Colombia and their extensions 2007-2011. The investigation is descriptive, under a quantitative approach. The results show the costs of desertion in the University of La Guajira are a relevant indicator to the extent that it reflects the degree of efficiency of its institutional policies. However, the estimation of monetary costs and rates of desertion, present differences according to the population and analyzed periods. These differences are: greater desertion rate and costs, as much in the main campus as in the extension, in the second academic period of the 2010. In this period range the desertion rate oscillated between 12, 88% and 27, 29%, reaching a high cost according to related academic programs in these ranges. The highest tendency for greater desertion rates and costs are in programs offered in Fonseca and Villanueva. The most relevant factors for these tendencies are: low academic achievement, the lack of professional direction and scarce institutional support.
