Abstract: In the sphere of business competitiveness, markets more complex and more demanding consumers exist. In the current context in which companies operate competitiveness is of paramount importance to be efficient and get results. Family businesses grow. There comes a time that it is difficult for the family to occupy key positions and have all the requirements and skills required to meet the challenges it faces. We surveyed 75 companies in the commercial sector of the Mexicali Valley. The sample includes 46 family businesses (EF) and 29 non-family enterprises (ENF). The objective was to acquire a comparative analysis of the level of competitiveness of the EF and the ENF through a map of competitiveness. This map reveals that the EF have a level of 65 per cent competitiveness and the ENF a 76 per cent of competitiveness respectively. We analyzed the EF with regard to succession. The results reveal that 26% of EF have a succession plan in writing. We encourage EF’s to have a strategic plan, which employees should be familiar, to get the expected results and survive in today's markets
