ENVIRONMENTAL INNOVATION ACTIVITIES IN MEXICO’S COMPANIES, ACTIVIDADES DE INNOVACION AMBIENTAL EN LAS

Abstract: This study describes and examines the activities of innovation in product, process and organizational of environmental nature of the companies in Mexico. Some information was obtained from 10,200 productive units of the Survey on Research and Technological Development, Module on Biotechnology and Nanotechnology (ESIDET MBN 2012) carried out by the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI, 2012a). Data related to environmental control and protection costs, environmental certifications and the perception of the company on the relevance of environmental factors in the objectives of innovation were used to develop this study. The results show the number of businesses that spend on pollution control and reduction is quite low relative to the number of economic units that opt for certifications such as ISO 14001, Clean Industry or ISO 26000. On the other hand, over 60% of respondents perceived that factors such as the development of products that do not harm the environment, reduce energy consumption and reduce environmental damage during the production process are highly significant innovation goals. Results allow us to discern that productive organizations in Mexico are more inclined to use alternatives of environmental organizational innovation than options for product innovation or environmental processes
