Abstract: Using a spatial econometric approach, we evaluate the impact of trade-generated costs on Mexico's largest cities for the periods 1995, 2000, and 2005. Results show that by manipulating geographic variables of first and second nature, costs of trade significantly affect the size of the population of its 59 major cities. An increase in trade liberalization reduces the population size. Lower domestic costs lead to greater concentration of citizens in major cities. These results are consistent with time, and consistent with what was proposed in the New Economic Geography theory
