Abstract:
Teaching hospitals are scenarios for practice by medical students. Despite their good reputation for academic and research activities, there is debate about the quality of care. This research analyzed the trend for mortality indicators, nosocomial infections and hospital readmission, from 2006 to 2010 and established differences in the results between 112 hospitals, with and without medical training programs. Both public and private hospitals in 11 cities in Colombia were examined. The data showed significant technical deficiencies in reporting information from hospitals. The statistical analysis showed no significant difference by periods analyzed and by the kind of Hospitals. Colombia has an oversupply of medical schools, but the quantity of teaching hospitals may be insufficient implying overcrowding exists with students and this could have an effect on the quality of health care for patients. Controlled studies are needed to establish differences between hospitals and the results of the quality of care.
