Abstract:
The global tourism industry has had a growing mobility behavior in recent decades. This has enabled countries to generate jobs and economic resources. Mexico has seen a similar pattern, but with some tourist inflow decreases by extraneous economic factors and public health. The aim of this study was to analyze the main variables of tourism in Mexico, and to identify those external factors that have led to reduced tourism in certain years. The analysis period is limited to 1980-2010, which includes significant periods of rise and decline. This economic sector is meaningful to Mexico. We use a literature review as well as an analysis and interpretation of statistics to generate conclusions. Results highlight the importance of the sector, due to the influx of tourists, employment generation, and increased tourist spending. We also note international economic externalities and public health considerations.
