Abstract:
The increasing global demand for potassium fertilizer coupled with the uneven global distribution of potash has spurred global effort aimed at identifying feasible sources of geological resources that have the potential for supplement. Consequently, glauconitic sandstones have been studied in relationship to potassium leaching experiments to determine the feasibility of potassium supply for agronomical purposes. In Nova Scotia, Wallace Sandstone is glauconitic, and it has been used extensively for building and construction purposes. In this paper, we have evaluated the potential for potassium release from Wallace Sandstone in acid solution at room temperature. We measured potassium release potential using solution pH versus time in addition to leached potassium after experiments. Results indicate measurable release of potassium from Wallace Sandstone samples.
