ESTIMATING RURAL LABOUR PARTICIPATION AND SUPPLY IN THE CHINESE COUNTRYSIDE: A CASE STUDY OF LIAONING PROVINCE

Abstract: This paper seeks to analyse Chinese rural male and female labour participation and labour supply behaviour. The question is addressed by means of a dedicated fieldwork survey of 450 rural households in a clustering of nine villages in Xinmin County located in the north-east province of Liaoning. The results indicate that female labour participation increases in line with the shadow wage and the wage rate, but decreases with the shadow wage and wage rate of the spouse. We also reveal that female labour supply is more sensitive to changes in the shadow wage than the case for male household members.
