Abstract:
This study analyzes the performance of agriculture sector in the state of Odisha from 1970 to 2012. The entire time period is divided into two subperiods, namely, pre-reform period (1970-1991) and post-reform period (1992-2012). With a trend break, growth rates are estimated by using simple exponential, kinked exponential and log-quadratic methods. The study finds a trend break in 1992, and observes that area, cropping intensity, fertilizer and area under HYV seeds register a significant deceleration in the post-reform period. The study advocates concerted public action as market-oriented approach fails to deliver, especially in agriculture.
