The IUP Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2005, vol. II, issue 2, 20-54

Abstract: Agriculture is something more than a mere economic activity. It is a culture and ought to be conserved. Self-sufficiency in energy or sustainable energy in agriculture is a must for preserving the rainfed farming systems for the future generation. In this study, energy use in dry land agriculture is seen as a system and the energy analysis is done from a holistic perspective, taking production, distribution and consumption, etc., as a part of agriculture. To achieve the above goal, T Kalluppatti Block in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu is chosen for this study. The statistical data, from the block records with respect to cultivated area, cropping pattern, yearly rainfall, types of soil, water potential and population of drought animals are collected through a detailed questionnaire. The response from a random selection of 240 farmers is studied and the data for different types of fertilizers used, amount of labor input, kind of mechanical operations, cost of cultivation and other related information are collected. With the knowledge of the energy content of various above-mentioned agricultural activities, the total energy inputs for various crops have been estimated.
