CATEGORY-WISE WASTELANDS IN DIFFERENT DISTRICTS OF SOUTH INDIA: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

The IUP Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2006, vol. III, issue 4, 44-64

Abstract: The main objective of this study is to examine the profile of category-wise and district-wise wastelands of South India, both at the aggregate and disaggregate levels. Andhra pradesh recorded the highest and Kerala indicated the lowest share of wastelands in the total geographical area among the Southern states. Further, it is clear that the districts, viz., Chittoor, Nellore, Cuddapah, Visakhapatnam and Prakasam record more than 20% of the wastelands in the respective geographical areas of the districts in Andhra pradesh, but definite conclusions could not be drawn from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as there are some newly formed districts in these states. From the analysis on the measurement of concentration index, this study reveals that Andhra pradesh indicats the highest share in most of the specified categories (13) of wastelands except in the Land Affected by Salinity/Alkalinity Coastal/Inland, Degraded Land under Plantation Crop, Sands-Inland/Coastal, and Mining/Industrial wastelands across the states in South India. Except in Kerala, the concentration index indicated nil values in four out of 13 specified categories. This study proposes that there is an immense need to bring the wastelands into use, so that the economic development as well as the ecological balance of the country can be maintained.
