Abstract:
Poverty is a serious problem in Nigeria and the rural areas are the most affected ones. Recent literature emphasizes the multidimensional nature of poverty. This study analyzes multidimensional poverty in Nigeria using the 2006 Core Welfare Indicator Questionnaire (CWIQ) Survey data. Fuzzy set approach was used to assess the poverty profile of the rural households in Nigeria. The study decomposes multidimensional poverty across the zones, states, and the socioeconomic groups of rural households. It further decomposes the absolute and relative contributions of welfare indicators to multidimensional deprivations. The result shows that the multidimensional poverty index for rural Nigeria is 0.3796. It is also reflected that certain requirements such as health care, public transportation, supply of drinking water, food, all-season roads, and primary schools are important in solving multidimensional poverty in the rural areas. Multidimensional approach (fuzzy set) is very useful in implementing socioeconomic policies to reduce poverty diffusion. It is important that the government should look into the problems relating to housing and sanitation. The rural infrastructure should also be improved upon.
