The IUP Journal of Bank Management, 2012, vol. XI, issue 1, 30-46

Abstract: In the shadow of today’s prevailing world financial crisis, this study aims to investigate the changes that the financial crisis of 2001 has brought about in government and private commercial banking in Turkey. For this purpose, we perform an equality of mean analysis on the banks’ financial indicators between 1997Q4 and 2007Q1 by dividing the whole period into pre- and post-crisis sub-sample periods. Our findings indicate that for all sample banks examined, the crisis has created a trend break only in net profit, ROA (Return on Assets) and ROE (Return on Equity) figures but not in the other six variables. In addition, since the negative results created by the 2001 crisis eroded about a year after, we may say that the impact of the crisis was only a temporary shock rather than a structural break.
