Abstract: En el presente trabajo, tras comentar los cambios ocurridos en el sistema financiero español y sus consecuencias sobre las entidades de depósito, analizamos las alternativas estratégicas a las que se enfrentan dichas entidades. Presentamos los resultados de un estudio empírico, realizado a partir de una encuesta circularizada entre las cajas de ahorro y las cajas rurales españolas, al objeto de poner de manifiesto las estrategias implementadas por estas entidades en el entorno actual. Se pone de relieve que determinadas opciones estratégicas, como la calidad de servicio, el compromiso con el entorno social y el control de costes, reciben una especial atención por parte de las entidades analizadas. / In this paper, first we present the main changes undergone in Spanish Financial Systems and the strategic consequences of these changes over monetary financial institutions. Secondly, we analyse the strategies implemented by Spanish Savings Banks and Spanish Rural Banks, based on the results obtained from a survey carried out in these companies. Also, we test the significant differences that exist in the valuation of the strategies, according to some variables that characterize the financial entities as the size, geographical area of performance, business area and financial institution type. Finally, we propose three strategic groups based on the valuation of the strategies.
