Abstract: The article studies the banking system as the most important part of the financial market of Ukraine. It considers relations in the sphere of financial services and defines banking competition as struggle for consumer of banking services and creation of such conditions for other participants, which do now allow them having decisive influence upon the market. Due to this, it improves typification of banking competition and four types of competition are defined: banking competition, competition between the state and non-state banks, competition between banks and non-banking credit institutions, and competition between banks and non-financial organisations. Concentration ratio and Herfindahl-Hirshman Index were calculated in order to justify the type of the banking market, besides, the first indicator is typical for moderately concentrated markets, and the second - for the competitive environment. Conclusions with respect to the place of the banking system in the financial market are based on relative indicators, calculated with the use of official statistics.
