 A survey of the national innovation systemMaria Cristina Ortigão Sampaio Schiller Global Business and Economics Review, 2015, vol. 17, issue 3, 310-329 Abstract: This study analyses the national innovation system (NIS). Research on NISs addresses the role of institutions, interactive processes of learning and generation of knowledge within enterprises. This study, based on extant NIS literature, identifies competitiveness by evaluating performance of several economic sectors. The empirical study explored aspects of the NIS in Brazil, such as innovating activities, sources of information, cooperation relations and financing sources. Thus, the analysis of the NIS has four focuses: market, knowledge, networks and support services. The results suggest a positive correlation among the sectors with a higher degree of technological intensity and those with a higher degree of innovation. Service activities deemed intensive relative to knowledge show a higher propensity to innovate. Within the companies with selected services, the area of R%D (research and development) shows a higher intensity of innovation and practically all R%D companies establish cooperative arrangements explained by the role of the NIS.
