Exploring accounting research repository for innovation in higher education curriculum and contemporary market demand

Abstract: With technological advancement, the accounting profession landscape is rapidly evolving. This has created an immediate need to align higher education accounting curricula with the contemporary market demand. Through a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis, this work identifies current trends and highlights critical gaps, particularly in the integration of technical and soft skills, advanced technology, and data analytics. A detailed analysis of 210 documents authored by 201 researchers from 40 countries published in the SCOPUS database for the last 25 years (1997-2024) has been reviewed and analyzed with VOSviewer software. The analysis identified 884 unique keywords, citation count of 11, 212 reflecting the scholarly impact of this research domain offering insight on emerging themes of AI, sustainability, IFRS along with unexplored areas like Blockchain, data analytics, Fintech, cryptocurrency. It provides insights for researchers, educators and policymakers by bridging the gap between education and accounting profession.
