Abstract:
Despite its importance on the overall strategy of firms, de-internationalisation has not received the attention it deserves. This article offers a research framework of how de-internationalisation is addressed within the most prominent internationalisation theories. We begin with an overview of the literature on de-internationalisation and its main definitions. Additionally, a typology of partial/full and defensive/offensive de-internationalisation is proposed. To bridge the gap between internationalisation and de-internationalisation, such typology is used to explain how the eclectic paradigm, the Uppsala model, the network theory and the international entrepreneurship theory address de-internationalisation. Opportunities for future research and managerial and political implications are also discussed.
Keywords: globalisation; foreign direct investment; FDI; multinationals; market exit; de-internationalisation; foreign divestment; market withdrawal; SMEs internationalisation. (search for similar items in EconPapers)
