Is performance appraisal still performing?

Vittorio D'Amato and Alessia Banfi

International Journal of Business Performance Management, 2021, vol. 22, issue 4, 443-460

Abstract: The past 30 years have seen dramatic changes in the business environment. We are now in the so called volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world and Industry 4.0 era. The main aim of this study will be to analyse how performance appraisal has changed in order to adapt to this new world. Through analysis of the results obtained, a variety of needs emerge: to adapt to the culture of continuous feedback, to implement new digital platforms, to improve relationships between managers and employees through trust and dialogue, to simplify the performance appraisal system, and to reduce the objectives time-frame.
