Towards a closed-loop future: a systematic examination of circular supply chain literature

Abstract: Globalisation and consumerism have depleted resources and degraded the environment, spurring interest in the circular economy (CE) as an alternative to the linear 'take, manufacture, and dispose' paradigm. This work applies CE concepts to supply chain management to promote environmentally responsible production and consumption in unique ways. The circular economy and supply chain management must be aligned for efficient business process management. Circular supply chains are becoming more popular, but CE research in supply chain management is still in its infancy and poorly organised. To cover this gap, we provide a systematic literature review (SLR) that explains the circular supply chain movement, major theoretical frameworks and conceptual models, methodology, research trends, and critical gaps. This SLR increases theoretical and practical understanding of circular supply chain integration by bringing together a broad variety of academic papers to offer a comprehensive assessment of current research and suggestions for future study.
