Abstract:
As the Greek economy is slowly starting to recover from the recent economic crisis, there are high expectations from the country's agrifood sector. On the centre of this sector are 608 agricultural cooperatives, which have undertaken the role of strengthening agricultural production and improving sales for farmers. Meanwhile, the supermarket sector in Greece has recorded impressive growth during the last decades and remains the primary channel through which food products reach final customers on a daily basis. The aim of this research was to investigate the access of Greek agricultural cooperatives to the supermarkets shelves. The results show limited access and low percentage of sales to the supermarket channel. The most important challenges faced by the Greek agricultural cooperatives in accessing supermarkets were the payment methods, promotion, cost of access, and quality certifications.
