Adding value by degree: a case study

Abstract: Recent years have seen an increase interest in measuring the value that Universities and Colleges are adding to their students and several approaches have emerged to calculate this. This paper uses a known methodology to measure value added in higher education. We use this method to measure value added of the different business degrees within Richmond University. Our approach recognises the data limitations and the inherent problems of using grade point average (GPA) in the value-added calculation but provides a first step in exploring progression and differentiation of the different business degrees. A general finding at the University is that, in GPA terms, less quantitative degrees register a higher value added than the more quantitative degrees on offer.
