Rural entrepreneurship: expanding the horizons

Alex Avramenko and Jane A.K. Silver

International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, 2010, vol. 11, issue 2, 140-155

Abstract: Typically, the subject of rural entrepreneurship reflects a certain milieu limited to local or regional conditions and their revitalisation. Although it is inevitable and logical to link rural entrepreneurship to specific territorial conditions, this paper emphasises a step beyond this mindset. It sets out to hint that what is in excess here could be in demand elsewhere and/or what is perceived as an issue locally or regionally could be successfully resolved transregionally or internationally. The proposed shift addresses the typical issue of rural entrepreneurship / adequate and effective policies supporting and encouraging entrepreneurship in rural areas. The case example of the 'passport to trade' project summarises research on essential aspects of doing business transregionally, since an understanding of the other local business cultures becomes one of the essential keys to success.
