Critical factors of strategic procurement in textile and apparel sourcing companies in Hong Kong: an empirical study

Abstract:
The role of procurement has been undergone a tremendous changing in last few decades. Strategic procurement has become a key driver of competitiveness in textile and apparel industry. Based on a survey of 68 companies in the textile and apparel sector in HK, empirical testing was conducted to delineate the critical elements of strategic procurement and their effect to the company performance. Research methodology including questionnaire survey and interviews were conducted. The research result confirmed that top management commitment, long-term orientation with suppliers, information sharing with suppliers, supplier capability, auditing, development of key supplier and supply base optimisation are the critical elements of strategic procurement and they are positively co-related to the company performance in the textile and apparel sourcing companies in HK. Future research can be conducted a wider sample population and a larger sample size so that the result can be generalised to all companies in the industry.
