Rate adaptation schemes in WLANs

Abstract:
The IEEE 802.11 standard for WLANs plays a valid role in transmission of multiple bit rate data. The performance of the WLANs can be improved using the rate adaptation techniques. The rate adaptation scheme is a link layer mechanism in which the multiple transmission rates established by the WLAN standard are controlled. The 802.11 WLAN standard does not have any specific algorithms for properly utilising the multiple transmission rates provided by the WLAN standard. Therefore, many rate adaptation schemes are proposed to properly handle the multiple transmission rates. This paper focuses on the survey of the various rate adaptation schemes proposed by different authors and compares each rate adaptation scheme.
