Three theoretical approaches to pirate entrepreneurship: towards future studies of pirate entrepreneurship

Jari Kaivo-oja

International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, 2014, vol. 22, issue 4, 449-465

Abstract: An increasingly turbulent, hypercompetitive and dynamic business environment is an expected starting point and business environment for pirate entrepreneurs. In the article, three major traditions of business research (theory of creative destruction, OLC/LCC theory and business war gaming framework) are elaborated and linked to the studies of pirate entrepreneurship. These theoretical approaches help to link the issue of pirate entrepreneurship to foresight research. The key conclusion of the research is that probably new forms of dynamic pirate entrepreneurship can provide new solutions to the triple challenge problem of innovation management, i.e., problems related to creative destruction, disruptive innovations, and creative accumulation.

Keywords: pirate entrepreneurship; Schumpeterian theory of creative destruction; disruptive innovation; creative accumulation; life cycle theory; business war gaming; dynamic capabilities; knowledge management; knowledge brokering. (search for similar items in EconPapers)
