International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, 2024, vol. 51, issue 1, 86-105

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to analyse the interface between institutions and entrepreneurship for small businesses within the informal manufacturing sector, i.e., the handloom weaving industry in India. Also comparing efficiency in different institutional settings within the same industry is another purpose. Through a primary survey data have been collected and a data envelopment analysis has been applied in order to compare efficiency of different institutions within handloom weaving sector. From the theoretical and empirical analyses, it has been observed that weavers working under the master weaver institution are more efficient than weavers working under the cooperative institution. Entrepreneurial dynamism is a determining factor in explaining higher efficiency of master weaver institution in comparison to cooperatives.
