International Journal of Environmental Technology and Management, 2014, vol. 17, issue 5, 450-458

Abstract: In order to elucidate the genotoxicity and oxidative damage exerted by coke plant wastewater, we investigated the effect of coke plant wastewater over a concentration gradient of CODCr 40-640mg/L on the micronucleus formation in the roots and the antioxidant enzyme activities in the roots and the leaves of Vicia faba. The results suggest that coke plant wastewater can cause genotoxicity and oxidative damage on Vicia faba. And the increases of micronucleus (MCN) frequencies and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the tested tissue were induced by the wastewater in a concentration-dependent manner. These results also support the hypothesis that coke plant wastewater might induce toxicity in plants by the mechanism of free-radical-damage.
