Performance appraisal criteria: a survey of Indian organisations

Arvind Sudarsan

International Journal of Indian Culture and Business Management, 2009, vol. 2, issue 4, 373-391

Abstract: This article reports the findings of a study on performance appraisal criteria used by organisations in India. A survey type methodology was used to obtain the appraisal forms used by different organisations. The sample covered a wide range of organisations classified on the basis of type (commercial, government or other); ownership (Indian, multinational corporation or joint-venture); sector (private or public); industry, size and geographical region. The results indicate that the most important factor appraised by organisations is achievement of results or work output. Various other factors are also used by organisations to assess performance, including teamwork, work quality, people management and so on. Organisations often also seek information on other attributes including qualifications and experience, which can give the impression that factors other than performance or the disclosed criteria are used to make the appraisal.
