Evolution of system dynamics in supply chain management

International Journal of Indian Culture and Business Management, 2012, vol. 5, issue 1, 1-14

Abstract: System dynamics (SD) modelling has recently reemerged to the reckoning vis-Ã -vis supply chain management (SCM)-related issues. Current trends in research in SD modelling vis-Ã -vis SCM are primarily focused on inventory management, time compression, demand amplification, design of supply chains (and their integration), global supply chains and their planning and deployment. Originally, SD was referred to as industrial dynamics by Forrester (because it was developed for use in industrial scenarios only) and its roots lie somewhere in the realms of control engineering. In this paper, recent works in the area of SD are presented. Subsequently, the issues in research as they have evolved in these areas are discussed. Finally, the category wise details of work done under the banner of application of SD in SCM are discussed to present a comprehensive view of the two issues, as they have evolved over time.
