Supply chain ripple effect: impact of disruption profile and priority scheduling rules for perishable inventory

Abstract: This article covers the influence of supply chain structure and operations on supply chain resilience in general and the ripple effect specifically. We compare different resilience mitigation policies via an agent-based simulation model and show that in the presence of product perishability, the alternative sourcing policy has superior performance compared to inventory buffer creation or disruption acceptance. We analyse two supply chain contours in parallel with simultaneous and independent disruption modes. Disruption mitigation profile and the effects caused by it show that supply capacity deficit is a crucial factor defining supply chain inventory dynamics. Inventory priority scheduling rules change supply chain dynamics during different disruption impact phases.
