The knowledge-based view of the firm and upper echelon theory: exploring the agency of TMT

Abstract:
This paper explores possible relationships between the upper echelon perspective, i.e. the embeddedness of decision makers and the knowledge-based view of the firm. Under the premise that knowledge is the key source of competitive advantage, better understanding of the influence of top management teams (TMT) on knowledge creation and utilisation processes is needed. The paper aims at first, conceptualising basic types of TMT of firms; second, proposing links between the basic types and knowledge creation processes; third, developing propositions about appropriate measures of the relationship between TMT and corporate performance. Confronting cases from three countries with the deducted concepts illustrates patterns of differences and similarities that can stimulate discussion and future research.
