National intellectual capital: exploring Taiwan's standing

Abstract: This study proposes a set of National Intellectual Capital Indices (NICI) that can be used to rank the countries in the chosen data set, thereby clarifying Taiwan's intellectual capital standing. The key features of this study that adds value to the existing literature include the fact that it is a longitudinal study spanning the period from 1994 to 2004 and covering a total of 40 countries. The top ten countries in the rankings obtained for the present study include Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, the USA, Switzerland, Singapore, the Netherlands, Canada and Norway. Taiwan is 20th in the list. The major contributions made by the present study include the proposal of a simple and effective national intellectual capital framework that can be easily replicated every year and the research findings will provide valuable information for stakeholders and policy-makers, thereby helping them to formulate effective strategies for the building of national competitiveness.
