Narayana Rao International Journal of Logistics Systems and Management, 2023, vol. 45, issue 2, 194-227 Abstract: A macro-view of the supply chain management (SCM) adoption status in India is absent. Insights on the quantum SCM adoption, the process areas of adoption, the reasons for the adoptions and non-adoptions, and a comparison of the adopter and non-adopter firms in terms of process capabilities and firm performance are also not covered in the previous literature. The present study has created a comprehensive macro-view of SCM adoption in India based on a survey of the large manufacturing firms in India. This study finds that SCM adoption in India is low. The findings also emphasise that business case preparation is an important precursor to SCM adoption. SCM adoption results in a positive return on investment (ROI), with a lag of one to five years. Adopter firms were found to have higher operational performance, and market share than non-adopter firms. The findings of this study have practical managerial implications for practitioners, SCM vendors, consultants, researchers, and industry bodies.
