Determining workers efficiency using work sampling and time standards

Abstract:
In the competitive world where most logistics organisations and other service providers and manufacturing companies are operating, it is of great importance to have reliable and readily available information. One crucial piece of information is standard time, which is required to perform a task or to manufacture a product. The availability of standard time enables one to determine the number of workers, develop wage incentive methods to improve efficiency, employ machines effectively in service or production processes, and generally improve control of the costs associated with the processes. This paper shows how standard times can be determined from the results of work sampling in a variety of job types, using unique methods that we have developed. We describe here how to include discontinuity, employee efficiency and machine utility in the determination of standard times, and how to calculate cost per unit of service or production.
