Profitability of Maharatna enterprises in India during the post-liberalisation era: a cross-sectional analysis

Abstract: The public sector enterprises (PSEs) in India account for over 22% of the country's GDP and contributes around 6% to the total employment. The Maharatna scheme was introduced by the Government of India in February 2010 with the objective to facilitate expansion of their operations in both domestic and global markets. While assessing the profitability of the Maharatna central public sector enterprises (CPSEs), data envelopment analysis was applied. To make a comparison among the Maharatna CPSEs in respect of the consistency of their profitability, the ratio of mean to standard deviation of technical efficiency score was used. For identifying the nature of the trend in the efficiency scores of each of the companies under study during the study period linear trend equations were fitted. The study reveals a wide variation in the level of technical efficiency score across the Maharatna CPSEs during the study period. On the basis of composite score, BHEL and ONGC jointly established themselves as the best performers.
