Abstract:
Renewed interest in artificial neural networks (ANN) in the last decade has led to numerous applications of ANNs in various fields. This paper provides an updated review of ANN applications in business from 1988 to 1997, as published in English language journals. We classify the literature by year of publication, application areas, leading contributors and contributing institutions, and ANN model types. We then investigate the growth pattern of ANN applications in various business areas using a flexible growth model. Analysis shows that the top subcategories of business applications lacked in cross-fertilisation of ideas. We identify the subcategories of businesses with significant cross-fertilisation of ideas, which should be the subject of future research emphasis.
