Good decision – bad business?

Abstract:
This paper analyses the key ways in which sustainability and CSR decisions are made within businesses. It discusses methodological issues in correlating good business and good social and environmental performance. It then reviews the contribution of innovation and reputation to strategic decision making on the one hand and cash flows and risk assessment, on the other, to project decisions. It concludes that since social and environmental performance and commercial outcomes are so interwoven, it always makes sense to analyse with care the non-financial dimensions to business decisions.
